Sergey Balovin visits as artist in residence for 2 weeks

We have recently been honored to host, as artist in residence, Sergey Balovin, the world famous Russian artist who lives and works in Shanghai. He has traveled and been warmly received by audiences and critics in many countries, as he was with us in our home in Tivat, Montenegro. For more detailed information about his art practice check out Art for Random Object’s sake. You can also watch him at work on the Youtube video  (in Russian). The concept that he brings is a practice called In-Kind Exchange, implying that the artist in exchange for a portrait gets a trifle or small gift from each person he portrays. So far, in his travels he has received all of the fruits of the world, socks, lighters, a bike and drums as symbolic gifts from those he has done portraits for. After talking with him we decided to tell our friends, who have been coming to have their portraits done every day for 2 weeks, to bring something practical for the traveling artist in exchange. It could be food, a drink, tools to draw with, lighters, socks, clothes, or a specific thing from Montenegro and our culture. Sergey has been painting three … …read more,

Tivat

Hostel Anton’s base is in Tivat Montenegro, a town situated in the middle of Boka Kotorska bay (Boka Bay/ Bocca di Cattaro). Boka Kotorska is a large coastal inlet of the Adriatic Sea, formed by the partial submergence of the former Bokelj River which used to run from the high mountain plateaus of Mount Orjen above the bay. Tivat has a convenient position at the heart of the bay, giving easy access to many interesting locations and important places to visit (Kotor, Budva, Podgorica, Herceg Novi, Dubrovnik, Žabljak and more). Hostel Anton is situated just 7 km from Kotor (a UNESCO world heritage listed town), 20 km from the beaches of Budva and 18 km from Herceg Novi. We are 3 km from the Tivat airport and 2 km from the bus station. The nearest Railway station is located in Sutomore, 60 km from Tivat. The capital of Montenegro, Podgorica, is 88 km away. Our hostels

Hostel Anton is above all, a place to have fun, meet interesting people, rest and relax. It is also an ideal starting point for exploration of Montenegro and its neighboring countries. Our main goal is to attract young (at heart), creative, open-minded people whose stay at the Hostel would make a difference in their and our lives. Somehow, the unique atmosphere of the Adriatic coast, and our position on it does attract musicians, painters, writers, traveling theatre groups, jewelry makers and all kinds of unique people. This atmosphere is partly provided by the geographic position of our house, which has a huge, breathtaking sea view and a green garden. Our oriental-style gazebo, the full bar and banana, orange and fig-trees probably help in the creation of this small, hidden paradise (at least we think so). Also, we prefer to make things on our own and we collect antique stuff. The Hostel was also built from the bricks of the hundred-year-old house that belonged to my grandfather Anton (yes, therefore the name). If you appreciate unique, creative atmosphere and people, you will enjoy our Hostel, for sure. You will have an opportunity to hear a variety of bands and solo musicians … …read more,

Music & Art Club

Our hostel and home base in Tivat is not just a hostel, it’s also an art club and live music venue! We welcome artists, musicians and creative types to come and add to the ambience of the place. For the past three years the hostel has seen small concerts, jam nights and creative projects from both guests and local artists and the dream has slowly grown into making our own live music and performance venue. After last summer we knocked down a few walls, gave everything a fresh coat of paint, threw half a boat in as a bar and bought some more music equipment. Then shazzam, before you could rub your palms together and make a prayer we’d made our own little club. Since then we’ve kept the winter at bay by hosting some live gigs and jazz nights with members of local bands. Groups such as Ansambl Toć, Nuclear Mama, jazz maestros Baltazar as well as Montenegro’s entry into Eurovision 2012 Rambo Amadeus have graced us with recent fantastic nights of which there are sure to be more. At the moment the club is private, open to friends and guests but not the public at large. We welcome … …read more,

Directions

Arriving from the main bus station. You have 2 main options: The easiest way is to take a taxi, which costs €2-2.5. With your luggage and the trip that you have done it is probably the best solution. We recommend using the Red Taxi: 19-729 (this is their phone number, you can dial it exactly like this, even if roaming). Or you can call us and we will call a trusted cab company for you. You can follow the main street in direction of the center, Herceg Novi, Prcanj (about 1km) until you see the foot bridge. Just after the foot bridge and before the petrol station (Eko) follow the road on the right that runs parallel with the main road. After 100 m take the first right (There is a little cafe on the right corner called Cafe Lina, and on the left corner there is a sign of Hostel Anton). Walk uphill for 150 m. On the left side, you will see a sign for fortress and for Hostel Anton, turn left there. Follow this way, with a curve on the right until the end, you will see a white house (actually light pink) with flat roof, which … …read more,
